Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about Bioshock lately. You know how it’s all about choices being fake and stuff? I can’t help but wonder if that idea would’ve felt stronger if the game was more like those immersive sim games.
Like, imagine if you could try different things each time you play, but it still ends up the same way. Wouldn’t that make you feel even more trapped? It could really drive home that feeling of not being in control, you know?
I’m not saying Bioshock is bad or anything. It’s just a thought I had. What do you guys think? Would a more open world that reacts to what you do make the whole ‘no real choice’ thing hit harder? Or am I overthinking this?
That’s an interesting idea. It could work, but might also make the twist less impactful. The linear story lets them control exactly how you experience that revelation. Open-ended gameplay could dilute it.
Bioshock’s linear style worked well for its twist, but your idea is intriguing. An open-ended approach could add layers to the ‘no real choice’ theme. Might be tricky to pull off though. Could work better for a different game built around that concept from the start.
I get what you’re saying, but I think Bioshock nailed it with the linear approach. The whole ‘would you kindly’ thing hits you like a truck because you’ve been following those orders without question.
In a more open game, you might ignore some of those commands, which could weaken the impact. Plus, the tight narrative lets them build up to that twist perfectly.
Still, it’s a cool idea to play around with. Maybe a different game could pull it off.
