Why did Doom: The Dark Ages skip multiplayer modes entirely?

I just found out that the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages won’t have any multiplayer features at all. The developers said they focused entirely on the single-player campaign because that’s what most players want from modern Doom games.

I’m curious about this decision though. Previous Doom games had multiplayer options, even if they weren’t the main focus. Are they right that people mainly buy these games for the campaign? I personally enjoyed the multiplayer in Doom 2016 and Eternal, even though I spent more time in single-player.

What do you think about this approach? Is it better for them to put all their resources into making one really good campaign instead of splitting development between single-player and multiplayer modes?

Totally agree. The campaign in Doom 2016 was top-notch, so focusing on that makes sense.

Smart move, honestly. The multiplayer in both games felt tacked on and never captured what made the campaigns so addictive.

Makes sense from a business perspective too. Why spend resources on modes that barely get played when you could make the campaign even more insane instead.

Honestly, they made the right call. Doom 2016’s multiplayer was forgettable compared to the campaign and Eternal’s Battlemode was interesting but died quickly. Most people bought these games to rip and tear through demons solo. If focusing entirely on single-player gets us a longer, more polished campaign, I’m all for it.

Good point. They should focus on making the single-player campaign as good as it can be.

I get where you’re coming from. The multiplayer in Doom added a fun element, even if it wasn’t perfect. It’s tough to see such a big part of the franchise get dropped completely. They could have experimented with something different rather than just removing it altogether. Would’ve been cool to see what they could come up with.

Maybe they learned from Eternal’s Battlemode that players just want to rip through demons without distractions.
