Why did Doom: The Dark Ages skip multiplayer modes and focus only on single-player campaign?

I recently learned that Doom: The Dark Ages will not feature any multiplayer gameplay. The developers mentioned that the main appeal of modern Doom games is the campaign experience.

This decision seems significant, especially since many current titles offer both solo and multiplayer options. I’m curious about what drove them to prioritize single-player. Do they believe that fans are primarily interested in the campaign stories? Or are they overlooking potential players who enjoy multiplayer competition?

Has anyone else observed this shift in the gaming world, where certain franchises are moving away from multiplayer components? I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on this strategy.

Honestly surprised they even bothered with multiplayer in the previous games. Doom’s all about that power fantasy against demons, not competing with other players.

Totally feel you on that. The single-player stories in Doom really nailed it but the multiplayer didn’t hit the mark for me. Focusing on the campaign could lead to some epic experiences.

Probably saves dev time too. Why split resources when the campaign’s what actually sells copies?

I get it. Recent Doom games had multiplayer that nobody cared about. Better to nail the single-player campaign instead. Everyone remembers the crazy campaign moments anyway, not the multiplayer. I’d take a solid story over some tacked-on multiplayer mode any day.

Smart move honestly. Doom 2016’s multiplayer was pretty forgettable but that campaign was incredible.

Makes total sense. Doom’s multiplayer was always an afterthought compared to Quake or Unreal Tournament. The campaign’s where it shines - intense demon slaying and killer level design. Why waste resources on something people ignore when you could make the campaign even better?

Yeah, that tracks. Doom’s multiplayer was never its strong suit compared to other shooters. People buy Doom for the crazy single-player campaign.
