Why are antagonists in indie horror games often overpowered compared to other characters?

I’ve been playing a lot of indie horror games lately and noticed something weird. The bad guys always seem super strong compared to everyone else. It’s like the whole game world is full of regular people or weaklings who can’t do anything against the villain’s special power.

Is this a common thing in indie horror? Why do game makers do this? It feels kinda unfair sometimes. Like, why can’t there be other strong characters to help fight back?

Does anyone else notice this trend? What do you think about it? I’m curious to hear other gamers’ thoughts on this. Maybe there’s a good reason for it that I’m not seeing.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too in a bunch of indie horror games. It’s kinda cool though, makes you feel way more scared when you’re up against something you can’t beat. Amnesia: The Dark Descent did this really well. You just had to run and hide all the time.

It’s a classic horror trope, not just in indie games. Having an OP villain ups the tension and makes you feel helpless. That said, I get your point about it feeling unfair sometimes.

I’ve seen a few games try to balance it out with powerful allies or upgrades for the player. But then you risk losing that fear factor that makes horror games work.

Personally, I enjoy feeling scared and vulnerable in these games. It’s part of the appeal for me.

Makes sense from a gameplay perspective. Overpowered villains create that sense of dread and make you think twice before every move. Adds to the horror vibe.

It’s all about building tension. Powerless characters against a scary threat make players feel vulnerable. Keeps us on edge the whole time. Classic horror setup.

Totally get what you mean. It’s a common thing in horror games, indie or not. Makes you feel helpless and scared, which is kinda the point. But yeah, sometimes it can be frustrating when you can’t do anything against the bad guy. Still, that’s what makes it scary, I guess.
