Which horror game clichés and features are you tired of seeing?

Hey everyone! I’ve been playing a lot of horror games lately and I’m wondering what you all think is getting old in the genre. You know, those things that keep popping up in game after game.

For me, it’s the whole ‘find random notes everywhere’ thing. Like, who’s leaving these around? It feels so forced sometimes.

Another one that’s starting to bug me is the looping hallway trick. It was mind-blowing at first, but now it’s in every other scary game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on devs who use these. When done right, they can still be cool. I’m just curious what you guys think is getting stale in horror games.

What are some overused elements you’ve noticed? Any mechanics or story devices you’re getting tired of? Let’s chat about it!

Jumpscares. They’re cheap and predictable now.

Good horror builds tension slowly. Sudden loud noises just startle you for a second.

I’m getting real tired of amnesia plots. It’s like every other horror game starts with the protagonist waking up with no memory. Feels lazy at this point. Give me a character who knows what’s up and has to deal with the horror anyway. That’d be way more interesting than piecing together obvious backstory for the millionth time.

Those insanely tough doors that need a special key. Like, just kick it down already! Maybe add some variety in obstacles instead of always locking us out.

I’m kinda over the whole ‘batteries for your flashlight’ thing. It’s in so many games now. Like yeah, I get it adds tension, but c’mon, who carries that many batteries? Maybe it’s time for some new ways to keep us on edge in the dark.

The whole ‘sanity meter’ thing is getting pretty old. It’s in so many games now. Sure, it’s kinda neat to see your character go crazy, but it feels like a cheap way to make things scary. Maybe there are better ways to show fear without a bar going down?
