Surprising scares in non-horror video games
I recently played an action-adventure game that had some really scary parts. It got me thinking about other games that aren’t meant to be scary but still have some terrifying moments.
Have you ever been playing a game from a different genre and suddenly found yourself scared out of your wits? Maybe it was:
- A tense chase scene in an action game
- A creepy area in an RPG
- An unsettling character in a puzzle game
- A jump scare in a platformer
What games caught you off guard with scary moments even though they weren’t supposed to be horror games? I’m curious to hear about your experiences!
Subnautica got me good. Exploring the deep ocean was fine until those massive leviathans showed up out of nowhere. Nearly jumped out of my seat!
Bioshock got me pretty good. Those splicers coming out of nowhere in the dark hallways always made me jump. And the atmosphere was just so creepy even though it’s an FPS. Didn’t expect to be so on edge in that game.
Totally agree about Minecraft! Those spooky cave sounds still give me chills. And don’t even get me started on the Nether.
Dude, Half-Life 2 got me good back in the day. Ravenholm level? Pure nightmare fuel.
Those fast zombies coming at you in the dark, headcrabs jumping at your face. And don’t even get me started on those poison headcrabs.
Wasn’t expecting that level of horror in a sci-fi shooter. Still gives me the creeps thinking about it.
Oh man, Minecraft of all things got me. Those creepers sneaking up and exploding… Caves were nerve-wracking too. Never thought a blocky game could make me so jumpy!
