I’m looking for recommendations on games with amazing storylines. I want to focus purely on the narrative quality and not gameplay mechanics or graphics.
I’ve played through several titles recently and want to discover more games that tell incredible stories. Some games that impressed me include The Witcher 3 and The Last of Us, but I’m sure there are many other hidden gems out there.
Which video games do you think have the most engaging and well-written stories? I’m open to any genre as long as the narrative is top-notch. Please share your favorites and maybe a brief explanation of what makes their storytelling so special without spoiling anything major.
Planescape: Torment has some of the best writing in an RPG. It’s like reading a novel with dialogue that sticks with you. You’ll ponder its themes of identity and death well after you’re done. What Remains of Edith Finch is also fantastic. It’s a short game that shares a heartbreaking family story through beautifully crafted scenes.
Mass Effect trilogy is absolutely worth it if you haven’t played it. The sci-fi world is incredible and your choices actually matter - decisions carry over between games which blows my mind. And grab Disco Elysium too. It’s basically a detective novel you can play with the best game writing I’ve ever seen.
Outer Wilds totally caught me off guard - the way it tells its story through exploration is incredible. You’re piecing together this mystery bit by bit, and it all unfolds so naturally.
