I recently switched from console gaming to PC about half a year ago and started exploring independent games for the first time. When I check out indie game platforms, I notice that scary games seem to take up most of the top spots and featured sections. This got me curious about why this happens.
Is it because horror titles are simpler for small developers to create compared to other genres? Or maybe indie game players just really enjoy being scared? It’s interesting because when I look at major gaming stores, the trending games are usually completely different types.
I’d really appreciate hearing thoughts from people who play these games and also from developers who make them. What do you think drives this trend?
Horror games really shine in the indie scene. They bring a fresh twist to gameplay and watching streamers freak out just adds to the excitement. It’s like a rollercoaster you can enjoy from your couch.
Horror fits indie devs well since you don’t need huge budgets or top-notch graphics to create a scary experience. Just solid sound design and clever level design can really ramp up the fear factor.
Indie horror hits different because it’s raw and experimental. Big studios can’t pull that off when they’re worried about shareholders. Horror’s personal too - what scares me might not faze you at all. So indie devs can dig into really specific fears and create atmospheres that mainstream games won’t even attempt.
