What computer specs do I need for developing indie horror games

I’m planning to start creating my own indie horror game and I’m curious about the ideal computer setup for this type of project. I want to ensure I have sufficient power to run game development software, 3D modeling tools, and perform testing without facing any performance challenges.

I’m exploring various options but I’m unsure which specifications are crucial for game development tasks. Should I prioritize CPU capabilities, GPU strength, or RAM size? My budget isn’t large, but I want something that can effectively manage the workload.

Has anyone here put together or purchased a PC specifically designed for indie game development? What would you suggest for someone just getting started with horror game creation?

For indie horror dev, I’d say aim for at least 16GB of RAM. Game engines like Unity and Unreal can use a lot of memory, especially with textures and models. Make sure your CPU and GPU are solid too, but RAM will definitely give you the biggest boost in performance.

I built my setup a few years ago and I can tell you that a decent mid-range GPU is way more important than most people think. You definitely need RAM for your engine, but with horror games, there are tons of lighting and atmospheric effects to consider. You’ll be doing real-time rendering tests all the time. I went with a 1660 Super and it runs Unity and Blender great without breaking the bank.

SSD makes a huge difference too, especially when loading large project files in engines

Don’t forget about CPU cores if you’re planning to compile builds frequently

You don’t need anything crazy powerful when you’re starting out. I built my first horror game on a basic setup and it worked fine for simple stuff. Just make sure your chosen engine runs smoothly - you can always upgrade later when you need more juice.
