I’ve already got a few on my list like Bioshock, This War of Mine, and Orwell, but I’m hungry for more. The tricky part is that I’m trying to avoid games made purely for fun. Dystopian games are my jam. Have you tried ‘Papers, Please’? It’s a grim look at life as a border inspector in a fictional communist state that makes you ponder authoritarianism and moral choices. Another one is ‘Frostpunk’. It’s a city-builder set in a frozen apocalypse where you must make tough calls to save your people. Both games really stick with you and leave you thinking.
Ever tried ‘Beholder’? It’s this dark game where you spy on tenants for the state. Really makes you think about surveillance and moral choices in a totalitarian world.
Nier: Automata is worth checking out. It’s a mind-bending game that explores what it means to be human in a post-apocalyptic world. The story gets pretty deep and philosophical, especially when you dig into the different endings. Definitely made me think about existentialism and the nature of consciousness.
Disco Elysium is a must-play if you’re into dystopian themes. It’s set in a gritty, alternate world recovering from a failed communist revolution. The game dives deep into political ideologies, class struggles, and the human psyche. It’s not action-packed, but the writing and choices you make are incredibly thought-provoking. Definitely not a game you’ll forget in a hurry.
Deus Ex series is a gold mine for dystopian themes. Touches on transhumanism, corporate control, and social inequality. The original’s a bit dated graphics-wise, but Human Revolution’s still solid. Definitely gets you thinking about where tech might take us.
