Seeking input on concept for debut indie horror game

I’m working on my first horror game and need help deciding on a theme. I’ve narrowed it down to two ideas:

  1. A virus transforms people into monsters that attack the main character’s home.
  2. A cult angers a deity, turning cultists into creatures that invade the protagonist’s house.

Which concept do you think offers more interesting monster design possibilities? The first is grounded in reality, while the second allows for more imaginative creatures with human elements.

The game takes place in a modern house (1990s to present). I’ve already created assets for this setting. If you have other theme suggestions that fit this environment, I’m open to hearing them.

I’m a solo developer and this is my first project. I want to keep it simple but engaging. What are your thoughts on these ideas or any other concepts that might work well for a beginner’s indie horror game?

Thanks for your input! I’m excited to hear what the community thinks about these options.

Both ideas have potential, but I’m leaning towards the cult angle. It gives you more creative freedom with the monsters and could lead to some really unsettling designs. Plus, the cult backstory opens up opportunities for creepy lore and environmental storytelling.

That said, don’t overthink it for your first game. Pick whichever one excites you more and run with it. The key is finishing the project and learning from the process.

The cult idea sounds pretty sweet. You could go wild with the monster designs and mix in some creepy symbols around the house. Whatever you pick though, just focus on finishing it. First games are all about learning the ropes.

The cult idea sounds cool. You could mix human and animal features for some freaky monsters. Maybe add some weird rituals or symbols around the house too. Just have fun with it!

Cult storyline sounds dope. You could go nuts with weird monster designs and sprinkle in some eerie cult stuff around the house. As a first game though, pick whichever one gets you more excited to work on it. The main thing is to finish it and learn from making it.

The cult idea has more potential for unique monsters.

You could create some really freaky hybrid creatures.

Plus the backstory gives you room to add creepy details throughout the house.
