I’m trying to find those really basic first-person horror games that were popular in the early 2010s. They were usually made by solo developers on a tight budget and focused mainly on walking around creepy environments. The gameplay was super simple - you would just explore rooms and maybe interact with a few objects here and there. Most of them were trying to capture that atmospheric horror vibe similar to Amnesia. I think a lot of them were built using Unity engine and had graphics that looked like PS2 or PS3 quality rather than the pixelated PS1 style that’s everywhere now. These games were typically available for free and didn’t have complex mechanics or gimmicky features. I remember they created really good atmosphere despite being so simple. Anyone know some examples of games like this? I can’t recall the specific titles but I really want to play something similar again.
Yeah I remember those! You’re probably thinking of Penumbra Overture. Just basic walking around in dark places but the atmosphere was creepy as hell.
Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear could work - they’re Source engine mods though
Totally get what you’re saying. Those early 2010s indie games really nailed that creepy vibe. SCP - Containment Breach was popular but had more mechanics than you’re looking for. Slender: The Eight Pages is iconic and super simple but it’s genuinely terrifying. Imscared also played with your mind in cool ways. Both of these games might fit the bill for that atmospheric horror you want.
White Night and Home were solid picks from that era too
Yeah, Unity horror games were huge back then. You’re probably thinking of The House or one of those early SCP games that wasn’t Containment Breach.
