I’m tired of reading dystopian stories that always seem to be set in America or some version of it. It feels like every book I pick up is either explicitly in the US or trying to hide that it’s basically America in disguise.
Can anyone recommend good dystopian novels that take place in other parts of the world? I’d love to explore different cultures and settings in these dark future scenarios.
I’m not interested in Hunger Games knockoffs either. Something original and well-written would be great. Any suggestions for dystopian books that break away from the typical American setting?
I’ve been on a dystopian kick lately too. Have you checked out ‘Metro 2033’? It’s based in post-apocalyptic Moscow subway tunnels. Super atmospheric and creepy. The game adaptation is pretty solid too if you’re into that.
Oh man, I feel you on that. American dystopias are so overdone. Have you tried ‘1Q84’ by Haruki Murakami? It’s set in Japan and has this weird, surreal vibe. Not your typical dystopia, but definitely messes with reality. Or ‘The Memory Police’ by Yoko Ogawa - another Japanese one that’s pretty haunting. Both are way different from the usual US-centric stuff.
Check out ‘Fahrenheit 451’ by Ray Bradbury. It’s not explicitly set in the US, and the themes are universal. The book explores a world where books are banned and firefighters burn them.
