Is the Indie Horror Tournament truly representative?

I’ve got some thoughts about the recent Indie Horror Tournament. It seems like it didn’t quite hit the mark. Here’s why I think it fell short:

  1. It felt more like a popularity contest than a real battle. Most voters probably just picked their favorite characters without thinking about how they’d actually match up in a fight. That’s probably why William Afton from FNaF won - it’s just such a well-known game.

  2. The rules weren’t clear. Were the characters fighting in their own universes or in ours? Like, are we thinking of Monika as a real person or just a character in a game? Same for Freddy and the others. It makes a big difference!

  3. We don’t really know how strong some characters are. Take Freddy, Monty, and Red/The Scientist - their full abilities are kind of a mystery. That’s probably why the Freddy vs Huggy match was so close.

What do you all think? Am I off base here, or did anyone else notice these issues? Let me know if you’ve got other points to add!

I get where you’re coming from. These fan tournaments are always a bit of a mess. The popularity thing is definitely an issue. It’s hard to judge actual combat potential when you’re dealing with characters from such different games and styles.

Maybe they could do separate brackets for different types of horror games next time? Like one for survival horror, one for psychological horror, etc. Might make it easier to compare apples to apples.

I missed the tournament this year, but sounds like it had some issues.

Popularity contests are tough to avoid with fan voting. Maybe they could do a mix of fan votes and judges’ scores next time?

Clearer rules on character abilities would help too. It’s hard to compare across different game worlds.

Those are good points about the tournament.

Popularity definitely skews things in these contests.

Maybe they could have players vote on specific matchup scenarios instead of just characters.

That might make it more about the actual fights.

Interesting points about the tournament. I didn’t catch it this year, but it sounds like there were some issues with the setup. Maybe next time they could have clearer rules about character abilities and how the fights would actually work. Still, it’s always fun to see indie horror get some spotlight.

Yeah, indie horror tourneys can be tricky to balance.

Maybe they could add a panel of judges to weigh in alongside fan votes?

That might help even things out a bit.
