Is it wrong to refuse letting my buddy's child try out my scary video game? đź‘»

I made a really spooky game and my friend wants his 7-year-old to play it. I said no because it’s too scary for kids. Now his girlfriend is mad at me. She thinks their son is old enough and I shouldn’t decide what’s okay for their kid.

My friend played it and got super scared. I don’t think a little kid should see that stuff. I told them they can let him play when it’s out on Steam, but for now, I get to choose who plays it.

Now they’re not talking to me. I feel bad, but I think I did the right thing. What do you guys think? Should I have just let the kid play?

Nah, you did the right thing. A 7-year-old shouldn’t play super scary games. That’s just asking for nightmares. The parents can decide later if they really want to, but you’re not wrong for saying no.

You made the game, so you get to decide who plays it. If it’s too intense for kids, sticking to your guns is totally fine. Maybe suggest some kid-friendly spooky games instead? There are tons out there that won’t give the little dude nightmares.

Totally get where you’re coming from. As the creator, you know best what’s in the game. Seven is pretty young for hardcore scares. There are plenty of fun, spooky games for kids that age that won’t give them nightmares. Stick to your guns on this one.

You’re not wrong. It’s your game, your call.

Seven’s too young for hardcore scares anyway.

Maybe suggest some milder spooky games they could try instead?

As a game dev myself, I totally get it. You know exactly what’s in your game and how intense it is. Seven is way too young for serious horror stuff. There’s a big difference between kid-friendly spooky and nightmares-for-weeks scary. Your friends will get over it. Just keep doing your thing and making awesome games.
