I made a catalog of scary games inspired by Heinrich Unheimlich's theory of fear

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into Heinrich Unheimlich’s work on fear and got inspired to create a list of horror games that tap into different types of fears. It’s been a fun project, but I’m sure there are tons of great games I might have missed.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! What scary games do you think would be perfect additions to this list? Maybe you know some hidden gems or classics that really nail specific fears?

It would be awesome to get some recommendations and expand the catalog. Feel free to share any games you think fit the bill, along with which fear you think they represent best. Let’s build an epic list of spine-chilling games together!

Nice idea! Layers of Fear messes with your head. The shifting environment keeps you off balance. Plays on fears of losing grip on reality.

Silent Hill 2 is a must-add. It dives deep into psychological fears and guilt. The foggy town and twisted monsters really get under your skin.

SOMA’s a good one for existential dread. The underwater setting and questions about consciousness really mess with you. Not jump-scary, but leaves you feeling uneasy long after you finish.

Sounds cool! I’d add Amnesia: The Dark Descent to your list. It nails that fear of the unknown and helplessness. You’re constantly on edge, never knowing what’s around the next corner. Definitely got my heart racing more than a few times!

Cool project! I’d toss Subnautica into the mix. It’s not strictly horror, but man, those deep ocean sections tap into primal fears of the unknown and isolation. The darkness and weird creatures lurking in the depths really get your heart pounding. Plus, the constant threat of running out of oxygen adds a whole other layer of tension.
