George Lucas discusses Star Wars gaming while trying out 'Dark Forces' in 1995 interview

I came across this intriguing old video from 1995 featuring George Lucas as he plays the Dark Forces game. During this time, he shares his perspective on video games related to Star Wars.

What struck me was his genuine reaction to seeing his universe transformed into an interactive form. It’s clear he’s keen to understand how the gameplay elements function and how players engage with the Star Wars universe through these games.

Has anyone else watched this video? I’m curious about what other developers and creators from that time thought about video game adaptations of their work. It seems like Lucas had specific views on how Star Wars should be depicted in video games.

Does anyone know if there are more videos of other creators from the 90s testing games based on their creations?

That video’s pretty cool. You can see Lucas was genuinely shocked by how immersive games were back then. Dark Forces nailed the Star Wars atmosphere perfectly. I wish more creators shared their reactions to game adaptations - we rarely get to see what they actually think when their worlds become interactive.

Totally agree, Dark Forces captured the Star Wars feel perfectly. It’s awesome knowing Lucas was on board with it.

Would love to see more footage like this from back then. Gaming was so different in '95 and seeing creators actually experience their own stuff being turned into games must’ve been wild.

That interview really shows how different the 90s were when gaming was still pretty new to most people.

I played Dark Forces when it dropped and honestly? It felt more like real Star Wars than some of the movies that came after. Lucas was apparently pretty impressed with how they nailed the universe without leaning on Jedi stuff. Kyle Katarn was awesome too.

Dark Forces was such a solid FPS for its time. Really cool that Lucas seemed to get how games could expand his universe beyond just movies and books.
