Does knowing game mechanics ruin the magic? I miss getting lost in game worlds

Back when I was a kid, playing my PS2 games felt like stepping into different worlds. Every game seemed full of adventure and mystery. I got curious about how they were made, so I learned some basic coding stuff.

Now I know characters are just moving coordinates and hitboxes. I understand how shaders work and can spot bad ports. It’s like the curtain’s been pulled back, you know?

I miss the days when I’d look at a game and think “Wow, how does this even work?” Now it’s harder to get sucked in because I see all the limitations and technical stuff.

Anyone else feel like knowing too much about game dev has made it tougher to get lost in games like you used to? How do you deal with it?

I get what you mean. Sometimes knowing how the sausage is made can take away the magic. But for me, understanding game mechanics has made me appreciate the artistry even more. Like when a game pulls off something really clever or ambitious, I’m even more impressed now.

I kinda feel you on that. It’s a double-edged sword, right? Knowing how games tick can make some of the magic fade. But it also opens your eyes to the crazy stuff devs pull off with limited resources.

Try focusing on the overall experience instead of nitpicking the tech. Some games still manage to blow me away, even when I know what’s under the hood.

Totally get that feeling. But sometimes knowing the tricks makes me appreciate the really clever stuff even more. Like when a game does something mind-blowing with those basic tools.
