I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately after playing through most of FromSoftware’s catalog. Even though we have newer titles like Elden Ring, Sekiro, and Dark Souls 3, I keep coming back to the original Dark Souls.
There’s something special about the interconnected world design and how everything loops back on itself. The way Firelink Shrine connects to so many different areas still blows my mind. Plus, the bosses feel more memorable to me compared to the later games.
But I’m curious what other people think. Are the newer games actually better or does the first Dark Souls hold up as their masterpiece? What makes it stand out for you if you think it’s still the top choice?
Elden Ring’s open world is incredible, but nothing beats realizing you can see almost everywhere you’ve been from Firelink Shrine. DS1’s world density is unmatched.
Dark Souls 1 really nailed the world design. There’s something about navigating that interconnected map that just feels right. I do think Sekiro’s combat is much more refined and satisfying once you get the hang of parrying. There’s an authenticity to DS1, like it was a starting point for FromSoftware, and that roughness adds to its charm.
Dark Souls 1 hits different - there’s something about it that sticks with you. Sure, the newer games look better and control smoother, but DS1 has this raw charm that can’t be replicated. Every piece of lore you uncover feels earned, and the world design? Absolutely incredible. It just pulls you in completely.
