Do modern speech patterns in fantasy games break immersion?

Hey folks, I’ve been playing Avowed and something’s been bugging me. You know how we often joke about ‘Marvel-style’ dialogue in games? Well, I think I’ve figured out why it feels off, especially in fantasy settings.

It’s not just about quips. It’s when characters use phrases that feel too modern or Earth-like. For example, in Avowed, your character can tell someone to ‘set healthy boundaries.’ That’s therapy talk, right? It feels weird coming from a character in a fantasy world.

I’m not hating on the game, I actually really like it! But it got me thinking about how dialogue can make or break immersion. Wouldn’t it be better if characters spoke in ways that fit their world, even if the ideas are similar?

What do you guys think? Have you noticed this in other games? How important is linguistic immersion to you when playing fantasy RPGs?

Yeah, modern lingo in fantasy games can be jarring. It’s like when a medieval knight says ‘okay’ or ‘cool.’ Breaks the spell a bit. But I get why devs do it. They want characters to feel relatable. Still, I prefer when games put in the effort to create unique dialogue that fits the world. Makes the whole experience more immersive.

Yep, those modern phrases can feel out of place.

I’ve seen it in a bunch of games lately.

It’s tough to balance relatability with world-building through dialogue.

Some games nail it better than others.

Totally get what you mean about dialogue in fantasy games. I’ve noticed it too, not just in Avowed. Sometimes it pulls me out of the game world a bit. But I guess it’s a tricky balance between making characters relatable and keeping the fantasy vibe. Still, when done right, it can really make the world feel alive.
