Creating Real Life Liar's Bar Game

Hey everyone! I’m considering setting up a real-life version of the Liar’s Bar game and would love your thoughts. For those unfamiliar, it’s a bluffing game where players make statements and others must determine if they are true or false.

I plan to organize this for my friends at a party, but I’m unsure about which rules to follow. Should I use cards, dice, or think outside the box and create something unique? I’m also curious about effective penalty systems for in-person play. Has anyone attempted to create their own version of this type of game? What aspects worked well, and what didn’t? I would really appreciate any practical advice on ensuring it’s entertaining for a group of 6-8 players. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Truth or dare cards are perfect for this. Forget the complicated rules - just focus on bluffing well.

Dice beat cards for groups that big. Russian roulette penalties keep everyone hooked.

I did this at a party last year and it worked great! We used regular playing cards - everyone claimed what they put down like ‘two kings’ or whatever. Penalties were tricky though. Started with drinking but that got messy, so we switched to silly dares or sitting out rounds. You need someone good at tracking everything because 8 people gets chaotic fast. Make sure everyone knows the rules upfront or it’ll be a disaster.

I tried cards with a big group - total mess. Start simple: basic truth/lie statements and poker chips for lives.

We did something like this but switched to a storytelling game. Everyone tells a quick story and the rest guess if it’s true or made up. Much easier than dealing with cards or dice when you’ve got a big group.

The video game version’s pretty simple - don’t overthink it. Grab some dice and roll behind cups. Call out your roll, next person either calls BS or adds more dice. Get caught lying? You lose a life. It’s way better than cards because the math gets crazy when everyone keeps piling on dice.
