Confused about controller requirements for It Takes Two on Nintendo Switch

Sorry if this has been asked before but I’m really confused about the controller setup for this game.

My partner and I got It Takes Two thinking it would work like other co-op games where you just split the joy-cons and each person uses one. But now I’m reading that both players need a full controller setup?

Does this mean we actually need four joy-cons total to play this game together? That seems crazy for a co-op game that’s specifically made for two people. Can’t we just use one complete controller and pass it back and forth during gameplay?

I’m starting to feel like this is just a way to make people buy extra controllers. Can someone explain if there’s a workaround or if we really do need that many controllers just to play together?

Split joy-cons work great for this game, just did it last week with my girlfriend.

You can actually share a joy-con! Just change the control scheme in settings and you’re set.

Yeah, one joy-con each works fine. Feels a bit cramped but totally playable. You don’t need to buy extra controllers.

Yeah, you need two controllers since both players control their characters simultaneously. If you only have the joy-cons that came with the Switch, just detach them - one per person. Not super comfortable, but it works fine. The controls are simple enough for single joy-con play.

My buddy and I played through the entire game with split joy-cons - worked perfectly. The simplified controls are actually great. Don’t worry about buying extra hardware. Just pop the joy-cons off and you’re set. Way cheaper than getting another pro controller.

Yeah, you need two controllers for It Takes Two. Can’t pass one back and forth since both players control their characters simultaneously. I get why it’s frustrating - feels like they’re pushing you to buy extra controllers.
