I want to introduce someone to video games who has never played them before. They don’t think games can tell good stories like books or movies do. I need a game that will change their mind and show them how amazing interactive storytelling can be.
I was thinking about games like The Last of Us series, but I’m worried they might be too hard for a complete beginner. Same with titles like Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk 2077. These games have great stories but the controls and gameplay might be overwhelming for someone just starting out.
What would you suggest? I’m looking for something that has an incredible story but is also easy enough for a total newbie to pick up and play. The goal is to prove that games are a real art form, not just mindless entertainment.
Update: Going to try Disco Elysium first based on some suggestions I got.
Gone Home might work too since it’s just exploring a house and piecing together the story. No combat or complex mechanics to worry about.
Journey is gorgeous and tells its story without any words at all
Disco Elysium is a brilliant choice. The writing is phenomenal and since it’s mostly reading and clicking, there’s no skill barrier. Stanley Parable is another one that really shows off what games can do that other media can’t - the narrator reacting to your choices is pure interactive storytelling magic.
What Remains of Edith Finch is perfect for this - beautiful story and basically just walking around
Firewatch is another solid pick. It’s basically just walking and talking but the story hits hard and the voice acting is incredible. The controls are super simple so they won’t get frustrated trying to figure out gameplay mechanics while following the narrative.
