I’ve noticed a lot of discussions online about how pixel platformers are too common in the indie game scene. Many seasoned developers mention that it’s tough to differentiate oneself in that category due to its oversaturation. Taking this feedback into account, I chose to redirect my efforts towards making a horror game. I believe this change could provide me with a better opportunity for success since the horror genre appears to be less competitive. Has anyone else made a similar shift away from popular indie genres? I’m interested to hear if others think stepping back from platformers was a wise decision or if I should have tried to make my initial idea stand out instead.
Good horror needs real scares, not just cheap jump scares and spooky music.
Horror’s tricky too though. Nailing the atmosphere and pacing takes tons of work, plus you’re competing with a sea of indie horror games already out there.
Both genres are packed, but horror might get you more visibility on streaming platforms
Follow your passion. If you’re jumping into horror just because it’s seen as profitable, it might come through in your game.
You’re probably just jumping from one crowded space to another. Horror games are everywhere on Steam too. The real problem isn’t picking the right genre - it’s whether your game actually does something different. If your platformer had a solid hook or unique mechanic, you should’ve stuck with it instead of switching just because people said platformers are overdone.
