Why do some games offer achievements only through paid content while others provide free updates?

I’ve noticed a growing trend where new achievements are only available through paid DLC, which really frustrates me as someone who enjoys completing all in-game achievements. It feels like developers are compelling us to spend more just to achieve 100% completion.

What adds to my annoyance is the fact that some titles, like Human Fall Flat, manage to provide free updates that include new achievements. This proves that it’s feasible to introduce new content without charging players.

While I understand that developers need to generate revenue, placing achievements behind a paywall seems unfair to those who have already purchased the game. Does anyone else share similar feelings about this trend? Are there other games that do a better job of handling post-launch content?

Yeah it’s annoying when you buy a game and can’t hit 100% without spending more. Really depends on the studio’s business model though.

It’s all about how developers decide to support their games after launch. Some believe achievements are part of the game you paid for, while others use them to encourage DLC purchases. It’s true that games like Terraria provided many free updates, but that’s becoming less common as studios rely on DLC revenue to keep things going.

Some devs see achievements as extra content they can charge for. Others use them to keep players hooked without charging anything.

Totally get your frustration. It’s great when developers like Deep Rock Galactic offer free updates and achievements without charging extra.
