Which non-horror games give you unexpected scares?

Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about games that aren’t marketed as horror but still manage to freak me out. You know, the ones where you’re not expecting to be scared, but then something happens and you’re like ‘Whoa!’\n\nI was playing an underwater adventure game recently, and it really got my heart racing. There’s something about exploring the deep that feels eerie and mysterious. Then there’s that block-building game where, even though you’re busy constructing your world, the dark depths and strange sounds catch you off guard.\n\nThis made me wonder if there are other games where the fear factor isn’t the main focus but still manages to surprise you with scares. Has anyone else had a similar experience? What games have thrown unexpected frights your way? I’d love to hear your stories and perhaps discover some new titles to try!

Man, I’ve had some unexpected scares in Fallout games. Wandering through abandoned vaults or metros, then suddenly ghouls pop out. Gets my heart racing every time. The atmosphere in those games can be pretty creepy when you’re not expecting it.

Yep, Zelda games can be surprisingly spooky.

The Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time still creeps me out.

Those hands that drop from the ceiling… nightmare fuel!

Subnautica is probably the king of unexpected scares. You’re just swimming around, minding your own business, when suddenly a reaper leviathan appears out of nowhere. Instant panic mode.

Minecraft can be pretty creepy too. Exploring dark caves with that eerie ambient music playing… then a creeper sneaks up behind you. Gets me every time.

Even some RPGs have their moments. I remember nearly jumping out of my skin during a certain sewer level in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Totally agree about underwater games. Exploring those dark depths gives me the chills.

Zelda games have some spooky moments too. Remember those ReDeads? Their screams still haunt me.

Dude, Half-Life 2 had some freaky moments. Those fast zombies coming at you in Ravenholm? Totally caught me off guard. And don’t even get me started on the antlions popping out of the sand. Not expecting that kind of scare in a shooter.
