I’m on the lookout for video games that astonished you with their plots. Have you ever played a game that seemed like one thing initially, only for the storyline to take a shocking twist that left you amazed?
For instance, I was taken aback by The Stanley Parable. I thought it would just be another simple walking simulator, but it turned out to be much more than that. The way it plays with narrative and breaks the fourth wall completely changed my perspective. I still reflect on various endings weeks afterward.
Which games have had a similar impact on you? Those where the storyline was so captivating or surprising that it lingered with you long after you completed it? I’m eager to discover those hidden treasures that deliver unexpected emotional depth.
Doki Doki Literature Club absolutely wrecked me. Went in expecting some cute anime dating sim and… well, let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for what it actually was. The way it slowly shifts from wholesome to genuinely disturbing is masterful. Had to take a break from gaming for a few days after that one.
Outer Wilds completely blindsided me. Started playing thinking it was just some space exploration thing but the time loop mystery had me obsessed for weeks trying to piece everything together.
Spec Ops: The Line really blew my mind. It starts off like your usual military shooter but quickly turns into a harsh critique on war and violence. The loading screen tips start to mock you as you play, making it even more intense. By the end, I found myself questioning my own actions in the game. It completely changed how I view games like Call of Duty.
Bioshock absolutely destroyed my expectations. Went in thinking it was just another FPS with cool underwater setting but that plot twist about halfway through completely flipped everything on its head. Made me realize I’d been mindlessly following orders the whole time just like the character. Really messed with my head in the best way possible.
NieR Automata got me good. Thought it was just another action RPG but then it keeps making you replay it from different perspectives and the story gets deeper each time. That ending E moment still gives me chills.
