Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about indie horror games lately. It seems like there are two main ways developers go about making them. I’m curious what you all think about this.
From what I’ve seen, some indie horror games focus on creating a really creepy atmosphere and psychological scares. They use things like sound design, lighting, and storytelling to freak players out.
On the other hand, some indie horror games go for more in-your-face scares with monsters, jump scares, and gore. They’re more about shocking the player and getting their heart racing.
What do you think about these two approaches? Do you prefer one over the other? Are there other paths for indie horror games that I’m not considering? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with different types of indie horror games.
I’ve played a ton of indie horror games over the years. Honestly, both approaches can work really well when done right. The psychological ones that mess with your mind are usually more memorable for me. But there’s something to be said for a game that just wants to make you jump out of your seat too. I think the best ones find a way to blend both styles.
Psychological horror tends to stick with me longer. Games like Amnesia and SOMA really got in my head. But I gotta admit, sometimes I just want that adrenaline rush from a good jump scare too. It’s cool when games can mix both styles effectively.
I dig both styles, but psychological horror usually creeps me out more. Games like Layers of Fear mess with your head in ways that stick around. Still, a good jump scare can be fun too if it’s not overdone.
Psychological horror definitely gets under my skin more. Those subtle scares stick with you long after playing. But both styles can work well if done right.
