Mark Frost discusses Twin Peaks future after David Lynch's passing

After the death of David Lynch in January, Mark Frost has been reflecting on the future of Twin Peaks. He recently shared his thoughts with Empire magazine regarding the continuation of the series.

Frost clarified they won’t pursue additional Twin Peaks seasons:

“We once toyed with concepts for a fourth season, but with David no longer with us, it feels impossible to proceed. Everything seems to have come full circle.”

This indicates that the 2017 installment, titled Twin Peaks: The Return, is likely the final chapter we will see. Frost further elaborated on how he and Lynch arrived at the conclusion of that season.

Discussion on the conclusion of The Return:

Frost envisioned a scenario where Cooper rescues Laura, allowing her death’s mystery to evaporate, essentially resetting the narrative. However, Lynch insisted that Cooper must face repercussions for his attempts to alter fate. Frost commended Sheryl Lee’s performance in that pivotal scene, highlighting the grim reality of Cooper’s noble intentions. This was their chosen way to conclude the story.

That ending still gives me chills. Lynch always knew how to make noble intentions feel terrifying.

I completely agree. Lynch’s vision is one of a kind, and any continuation would just dilute what made Twin Peaks so unique. The Return was definitely out there but captured the essence perfectly. It’s better to leave it on a high note than risk ruining it by stretching the story.

Frost’s right. Not every story needs to continue - sometimes it’s better to just leave it alone.

It’s tough to imagine Twin Peaks without Lynch’s unique touch. The Return was so strange but that final scene with Laura really sticks with you.
