TLDR: Want a realistic medieval RPG similar to Skyrim? This is perfect for you. Just grab some mods to fix the annoying parts first.
This game drives me crazy in both good and bad ways. I actually quit playing it twice during the beginning because of one huge problem - you can’t save whenever you want. The developers thought this was a cool idea but it’s really not.
Unlike games like Baldur’s Gate 3 where failing can still be fun, here one small mistake can completely ruin entire questlines and change major story outcomes. Even if you’re the type who never reloads saves, you might get trapped behind a tree or rock with no escape route and be forced to restart anyway.
The stealth system becomes super annoying without quick saves since whether you successfully knock someone out depends partly on random chance. Combat can be brutal too - three enemies can stunlock you to death in seconds. Losing hours of progress this way feels terrible. There’s an in-game item that helps but honestly just download the most popular mod and save freely. It actually makes everything more enjoyable.
That’s when I realized the secret - mod whatever bothers you. Slow herb picking animations? Gone. Annoying carry weight limits? Removed. Gear breaking after every single fight? Reduced with mods.
Does this make everything too easy? Not at all. You’re still just some peasant kid who can get beaten up by three guys with clubs.
Starting as a nobody is what makes this game special. You can’t read, can’t fight, don’t have proper weapons or armor. Learning these skills gradually feels incredible - better character growth than any other RPG I’ve played. Most games just make numbers bigger but here you genuinely become more capable. When you finally ride into town wearing real knight armor and people bow to you, it feels earned.
The attention to detail is amazing too. You can’t sneak around in heavy metal armor. Shops close at night like real ones. People freak out if you walk around covered in blood. Shop items actually sit on shelves instead of magically appearing. You need torches in dark places and food spoils realistically.
Sure there are problems like clunky combat, various bugs, and a weak ending, but this game does something truly unique. Definitely worth playing.
