Just finished Chrono Trigger and wow, it exceeded all expectations

So I finally completed this legendary JRPG that everyone talks about. Made by some of the biggest names in gaming back in 1995, this game really deserves all the praise it gets. I was not prepared for how much it would affect me emotionally.

The Story
The whole game revolves around jumping between different time periods to stop a world-ending disaster. You play as Crono and meet various companions as you hop from prehistoric times all the way to a dark future timeline. What makes it special is how your decisions actually matter and lead to different outcomes. The game was way ahead of its time with multiple endings and meaningful choices. I also loved that enemies appear on the map instead of random battles popping up constantly.

Visuals and Sound
The art style is incredible and each time period feels unique and alive. The music is absolutely phenomenal and really drives home the emotional moments. Songs like the theme for Frog and Corridors of Time are just perfect.

Characters
Every party member feels real and has their own struggles. Frog deals with redemption, Robo questions what it means to be human, and Lucca breaks stereotypes as a brilliant inventor. Marle became my favorite with her strong personality and refusal to just accept things as they are.

This game completely lives up to its reputation as one of the best RPGs ever made.

Frog’s whole storyline absolutely destroyed me emotionally. Going from Glenn to Frog and watching him struggle with that guilt over Cyrus was brutal. The moment when he finally gets his revenge and transforms back had me tearing up. Also loved how the game doesn’t hold your hand with the time travel stuff but trusts you to figure out cause and effect between the different eras.

Magus joining your party was such a cool twist. Going from this intimidating boss to actually fighting alongside him felt amazing.

Those dual and triple techs never get old either

Still holds up amazing well today too. That final boss fight with Lavos was intense and the way they handled multiple party combinations made replaying so much fun.

Chrono Trigger is one of those games that just gets everything right. The whole time travel concept could have been a mess but they pulled it off perfectly. I still get chills thinking about that moment when you first see the ruined future. And don’t even get me started on New Game+ - being able to carry over your progress and see different endings was revolutionary back then.

The Dream Team really outdid themselves with this one back in the day

That soundtrack hits different, especially when you reach the Ocean Palace section
