Creative ways to achieve dystopian soundscapes on a budget?

Trying to create industrial collapse ambiance without professional equipment. I’ve been experimenting with field recordings (construction sites, dying appliances), but it’s not hitting that existential dread note. Any unconventional sound design tricks or community-shared tools that have worked for your projects?

Layer subway screeches with slowed-down dentist drill recordings. Add intermittent silence to create uneasy rhythm. The asset library here has some great CC0 industrial samples to mix in.

I use an app called Tapegrinder that adds VHS degradation to voice memos. Recorded my radiator’s death rattle and now it sounds like a dying reactor core.
