Creating a Half-Life 1 mod: 'Average Joe' - A quirky life simulator with branching paths

Hey everyone! I’m working on this cool Half-Life 1 mod called ‘Average Joe’. It’s basically a life simulator, but with a twist. You play as a regular person, but strange stuff keeps happening around you. The cool part is that every choice you make affects how the story unfolds.

I’m trying to make it feel like you’re just living a normal life, but then BAM! Weird things pop up out of nowhere. Maybe you’re grocery shopping and suddenly aliens invade. Or you’re on a date and your ex shows up as a secret agent. You know, totally normal stuff!

What do you guys think? Have you played any mods like this before? I’d love to hear your ideas for bizarre scenarios I could add to the game. Also, if anyone has experience with branching storylines in HL1 mods, I’d really appreciate some tips.

Thanks in advance for your help! Can’t wait to share more about ‘Average Joe’ as I keep working on it.

Sounds like a fun twist on HL1 mods!

For a weird scenario, how about the player’s microwave suddenly becomes a portal to another dimension?

Branching paths can be tricky, but totally worth it for replayability.

Sounds like a wild ride! I dig the concept of normal life going off the rails. Maybe toss in a scenario where the player’s car transforms into a giant robot mid-commute. Or have them discover their boring office job is actually a front for an underground monster fighting league. Branching paths are tricky but totally worth it for replay value.

That’s a wild concept for a HL1 mod!

Love the idea of everyday life going off the rails.

Maybe have the character’s pet goldfish turn into a secret agent?

That’s a crazy cool idea for a mod! I’d love to see some surreal stuff like your neighbor’s dog talking to you about stock tips. Or maybe you’re doing laundry and your socks start a rebellion. Branching paths sound tough but so worth it for replay value.

Cool idea for a mod! Reminds me a bit of Stanley Parable but with more action. What if you’re just chilling at home and suddenly your furniture comes to life and starts attacking you? Could be a fun twist on everyday objects.
