I’ve been reflecting on how horror entertainment has evolved over time. In the 80s and 90s, there were incredible horror movies that truly terrified us in cinemas. Nowadays, we have a plethora of indie horror games available online, especially those that revolve around Halloween and spooky themes.
I’m interested in exploring the differences between these forms of horror entertainment. Do these new indie games evoke the same level of fear as the classic horror movies? Or is the experience entirely different?
It seems to me that the older films created a unique atmosphere and suspense that heightened the fear factor. In contrast, many of the current Halloween-themed games often rely on jump scares and interactive mechanics to scare players.
Has anyone else picked up on these changes? Which do you believe is better at delivering true fear and suspense?
Not fair to lump all indie horror games together. Yeah, most are just jumpscare spam, but look at SOMA or Signalis - they nail atmosphere just like classic horror films. The big difference? You’re not just watching the terror unfold, you’re living it.
